Quantitative Reasoning

DAT Quantitative Reasoning Strategies and Study Guide

Quantitative Reasoning rewards fast recognition and clean setup. The goal is not to perform every calculation the longest way; it is to select an efficient, defensible route.

Core skill groups

  • Algebra, equations, inequalities, and functions
  • Ratios, rates, percentages, and word problems
  • Probability, statistics, and data interpretation
  • Quantitative comparison
  • Applied mathematics and estimation

Use answer choices strategically

Estimate before calculating when choices are widely separated. Backsolve when options represent possible inputs. For quantitative comparison, test boundary values and special cases instead of assuming a pattern from one example.

Build a skip rule

  • If you cannot identify a setup after a brief read, mark and move.
  • Do not let one difficult item consume time needed for several accessible items.
  • Return with the remaining time and a calmer view of the problem.
  • Review whether the obstacle was knowledge, setup, arithmetic, or pacing.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I get faster at DAT math?

Improve recognition first, then calculation. Timed mixed sets, estimation, and error classification are more useful than repeating only familiar problem types.
